Laura McFadden
Art Director
One minute she’s listening to NPR. The next she’s head-banging to Breakfast of Champions with John Bernhardt on college radio. Don’t try to pin her down. Unless there’s a deadline. Then she’s totally on it.
So what exactly does an Art Director do?
To describe it the way my father did as he cut the checks for college tuition, “She gets paid money to finger paint.” Except now, the paint has been replaced by a computer, and I hire the people to do the finger painting. And this art director periodically takes breaks to visit the vintage clothing and antique stores down the street.
What motivates you?
I love that combination of a beautifully designed piece with a sense of humor or irreverence. “Witty” and “smart” are the two words I think about when designing.
Why King Fish?
Have you ever met a group of people who are filled with kindness, great at their jobs, and maintain their sense of humor? Well, I finally have. They are working here at King Fish. I am so grateful to be here and feel so lucky.
If someone met you, they’d probably never guess...
I’m 75 years old. Botox does wonders.
The best part of your job is...
Being part of the team. After working for 10 years on my own, I love collaborating with people.
The best thing a client ever said to you was...
“We are thrilled with the end product.”
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Sensitive, talkative, hungry.
And what would your colleagues say?
“Unique.” Then I hope they’d add, “In a good way.”
The kind of client you love working with is...
Smart and easy to work with. As a designer, your hope is that the final product is somewhere close to your initial inspiration, and it doesn’t get too mangled along the way.
Mac or PC?
Mac. Actually, I would like a Big Mac right now. I’m getting hungry. I love all the Mac products. I am a huge fan of the iPhone and iPad. I love the design and utilitarian qualities of them.
You felt you deserved a big fat raise the day you...
When I found Maria’s Vickers lost diamond in the supply closet.
If they made a movie of your life, who would you want to play you?
Audrey Tatou. But I really just want to look like her.
Would you shave your head for $1,000?
No way. But like Brad, I’d do it for $10,000.
